EDITORIAL: Hong Kong’s inconvenient truths

The structure and operation of the Chinese Communist Party has always ensured that its leaders have never had to be accountable to the people of China, only to their fellow cadres. That is why Hong Kong, with its “tainted” legacy of Western openness, is proving to be such a thorn in Beijing’s side.

Rather than serving as model for Taiwan of Beijing’s “one country, two systems” policy, the territory is a constant reminder of the fallacy and failure of that policy and a warning to Taiwanese of what they can expect from Beijing’s efforts to establish “political ties.”
