LETTERS: US should welcome Ma
Sunday, Apr 13, 2008, Page 8
I enjoyed reading Li Chen-ching¡¦s letter (Letters, March 29, page 8). The idea that president-elect Ma Ying-jeou (°¨^¤E) should be invited to visit the US has inspired me to point out that Taiwan¡¦s democracy has shed new light on China.
It is true that it is time that the US employed pragmatic strategy to ensure ¡§multilateral harmony¡¨ by allowing Ma to visit Washington before his May 20 inauguration.
Amid trend of democracy, people across the globe are longing for the sweetness of freedom, democracy and justice.
China is no exception.
US George W. Bush congratulated Ma for his landslide victory on March 23: ¡§Taiwan is a beacon of democracy to Asia and the world. I am confident that the election and the democratic process it represents will advance Taiwan as a prosperous, secure and well-governed society.¡¨
Under a context, Bush should endorse an unofficial and low-profile visit for Ma in Washington.
By so, a win-win situation will help improve cross-strait relations.
