    LETTERS: Women should be modest

    Sunday, Feb 17, 2008, Page 8

When I read the article "Girls and women to watch out when taking trains" (Feb. 5, page 2) by Staff Reporter Meggie Lu, I felt that one important piece of advice to improve the safety and awareness of girls and women was left out.

I value the opinion that women at all times should be honored and protected.

They should be considered the mother of mankind and treated as such.

As a protective measure, the article makes a number of recommendations for female travelers: "Protect your breasts and buttocks with bags, backpacks or your arms."

I cannot help but think that protecting the same parts with an appropriate layer of clothing would also be helpful.

This is not meant to deny the right of freedom of expression for any individual in our society.

Nevertheless, any kind of "freedom" comes with a price tag attached.

I believe that less inviting or provocative attire, whether subtly or grossly provocative, in public places, as well as more modest advertisements, would go a long way to increase public safety for our mothers.

Women can help women a great deal in that way.
