    LETTERS: Broadband a sham

    Sunday, Jan 27, 2008, Page 8

Your report on broadband coverage ("Broadband coverage to hit 100% soon, NCC predicts," Jan. 19, page 2) is just a painful sham. While low-level, Internet coverage may be widespread, residential customers have been stonewalled for several years when asking for high-speed connections such as basic T1 lines.

While Chunghwa Telecom wallows in a mountain of cash reserves and invests in Vietnam and other emerging markets, it has utterly failed to service the basic needs of Taiwan for high-speed broadband as the Internet converges with HDTV and other video media.

This contempt for its own market and failure to invest in local broadband infrastructure are outrageous, making Taiwan a laughing stock as the world's Internet Banana Republic.
