Letters: Don't fool the readers
Wednesday, Sep 26, 2007, Page 8
After reading your editorial ("If Macedonia can do it ..." Sept. 23, page 8), I'm once again so disappointed by the way irresponsible Taiwanese journalists fool their readers. It is obvious that you want to give the reader the impression that the dispute between Macedonia and Greece is very similar to the cross-strait situation.
However, the small country of Macedonia has fought its way through to the UN.
In fact, you know that Greece and Macedonia have official diplomatic relations, don't you? Greece does not claim sovereignty over Macedonia and vice versa. The problem with the name is a historic one and closely connected to the fact that the northern province of Greece uses the name Macedonia too.
The reasons why Taiwan cannot join the UN are absolutely different. Since Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan, it doesn't matter which name you use, whether it is "Taiwan," the "Republic of China" or "The Galactic Klingon Federation," like Johnny Neihu yesterday suggested in his wonderful column ("Referendumb and referendumber," Sept. 22, page 8).
Your very disappointed reader,
Jens Mueller
