Letters: Plumb misses the point
Tuesday, May 22, 2007, Page 8
Allow me to comment on Marc Plumb's letter, "Banana Republic Telecom" (Letters, May 7, page 8) and his criticism of our local telecom's Hinet ADSL Web page.
He misses the point. Granted it has not been updated for more than three years, but this means that Chunghwa Telecom ADSL speeds available to the public are stuck back in this slow, slow period.
The Consumers Association stated even then that in other technologically advanced countries such as Korea and Japan, ADSL speeds were three times faster and about half the price of those available to general consumers here in Taiwan. This is still true, or worse, as Hinet service is still stuck at antedeluvian speeds.
A multiplicity of new Internet services such video streams and Internet TV demand faster service but Chunghwa Telecom is adamant in only providing this more lucrative service to business and institutional customers.
Taiwan is clearly, as Mr. Plumb suggests, the ultimate Banana Republic when it comes to the Internet. But then most things in Taiwan are a ridiculous shambles and the idea of any reform is a sick joke.
