    Letter: Name changes ridiculous

    By Jay Chen

    Wednesday, Feb 28, 2007, Page 8

Your Feb. 11 editorial ("Half-baked name changes, Taiwan," page 8), which probed into the flaws at the center of the name-changing, was insightful. Among those mistakes, the most obvious must be the awkward abbreviations, such as "CPC Corp, Taiwan" or "CSBC Corp, Taiwan" with the word corporation duplicated if spelled out. The error is ridiculous even to us Taiwanese.

Though I praise the determination with which officials attempted to eliminate the confusion, owing to a lack of bravery this assertiveness turns out to be weak and laughable. Under pressure from China, it's still necessary -- and urgent -- for Taiwan to stand out and defend its sovereignty.

Nevertheless, if officials cannot pluck up the courage to do a more professional job of renaming, it would be better to alter nothing at all.
