Letter: Who's caring for the kids?

    By Lai Shu-mei

    Tuesday, May 16, 2006, Page 8

In my neighborhood, marriage is very popular. As expected, young brides bring their families babies soon after their weddings.

However, the parents of these children often have to desert this quiet, old-fashioned town and leave for the busier cities or neighboring counties to find work. As a result, the children stay with aging grandparents. The parents, who bear the heavy pressure of supporting the family, are incapable of properly accompanying children who need them at the most important time.

Plainly, it is a tough task for grandparents to pay attention to naughty children every minute of the day. These kids never receive the care and proper education they deserve.

The costs resulting from such extended family care are considerable because children in these circumstances can be led along the wrong path more easily.

Parents take care of their children in person so that disruptive teenage behavior is avoided.
