President Chen Shui-bian (
For the sake of the dignity of the Taiwanese people, Chen refused this humiliating arrangement and instead took the westward route to the South American nation. He also decided not to transit through the US on his way home.
It's rough for Taiwan to follow it's own road, but as an independent state whose national sovereignty has often been oppressed, this is the path that we have to take sooner or later and -- the sooner the better.
Of course, the US humiliation of Chen was a result of Chinese pressure and a desire by the US to teach Taiwan a lesson. China has repeatedly attempted to besiege, oppress and isolate Taiwan with the ultimate goal of annexing it.
China has had conflicts not only with Taiwan, but with almost all of its regional neighbors. Today, with the help of Taiwanese businesspeople who do not have their country's best interests at heart, China's economic strength is on the rise and breaking through the US' "island chain" in the western Pacific Ocean has become Beijing's ultimate goal. Due to its geographic position, Taiwan has become China's first target.
When the Soviet Union was still strong, then-US president Ronald Reagan publicly fought against it, calling it an "evil empire." Reagan stood by his democratic principles and opposed appeasement of the communists, bravely confronting the Soviet Union even though the arms competition was a heavy burden on the US Treasury.
Thanks to Reagan's steady leadership, the Soviet Union finally collapsed. And the US is now the world's only superpower mainly thanks to Reagan's stewardship.
Today, China has replaced the Soviet Union to become another evil empire. Its vicious methods are even worse than those of its predecessor. Communist China ignores universal values such as human rights, the rule of law, democracy and freedom.
It follows the traditional demagogic path of oriental empires. Domestically, it is implementing autocratic and dictatorial rule over unarmed civilians. Externally, it is striving to expand its territory to gain world hegemony. Due to its brutal and warlike nature, communist China has become a new source of chaos. Unfortunately, none of today's democratic leaders dare to follow Reagan's example and treat it as an evil empire.
US President George W. Bush's government has been playing along with China in order to gain minor benefits. It has treated democratic Taiwan as a servant who is always at its beck and call.
The Bush administration cannot compare to the Reagan administration. Is the Statue of Liberty standing in New York Harbor simply a decoration?

Recently, China launched another diplomatic offensive against Taiwan, improperly linking its “one China principle” with UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to constrain Taiwan’s diplomatic space. After Taiwan’s presidential election on Jan. 13, China persuaded Nauru to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Nauru cited Resolution 2758 in its declaration of the diplomatic break. Subsequently, during the WHO Executive Board meeting that month, Beijing rallied countries including Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Belarus, Egypt, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Laos, Russia, Syria and Pakistan to reiterate the “one China principle” in their statements, and assert that “Resolution 2758 has settled the status of Taiwan” to hinder Taiwan’s
Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s (李顯龍) decision to step down after 19 years and hand power to his deputy, Lawrence Wong (黃循財), on May 15 was expected — though, perhaps, not so soon. Most political analysts had been eyeing an end-of-year handover, to ensure more time for Wong to study and shadow the role, ahead of general elections that must be called by November next year. Wong — who is currently both deputy prime minister and minister of finance — would need a combination of fresh ideas, wisdom and experience as he writes the nation’s next chapter. The world that
The past few months have seen tremendous strides in India’s journey to develop a vibrant semiconductor and electronics ecosystem. The nation’s established prowess in information technology (IT) has earned it much-needed revenue and prestige across the globe. Now, through the convergence of engineering talent, supportive government policies, an expanding market and technologically adaptive entrepreneurship, India is striving to become part of global electronics and semiconductor supply chains. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision of “Make in India” and “Design in India” has been the guiding force behind the government’s incentive schemes that span skilling, design, fabrication, assembly, testing and packaging, and
Can US dialogue and cooperation with the communist dictatorship in Beijing help avert a Taiwan Strait crisis? Or is US President Joe Biden playing into Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) hands? With America preoccupied with the wars in Europe and the Middle East, Biden is seeking better relations with Xi’s regime. The goal is to responsibly manage US-China competition and prevent unintended conflict, thereby hoping to create greater space for the two countries to work together in areas where their interests align. The existing wars have already stretched US military resources thin, and the last thing Biden wants is yet another war.
