    Letter: Cheap laptops marketable

    By Leif Danielson

    Monday, Dec 19, 2005, Page 8

I have a suggestion: Quanta might consider an additional marketing strategy for their forthcoming US$100 laptop. A laptop that is "rugged, Linux-based, and so energy-efficient that hand-cranking alone can generate sufficient power for operation" would not only be useful in developing countries. Why not consider selling it to people for use in times of emergency such as when the power goes out, as it did during Hurricane Katrina?

I know that there are radios that can be hand-cranked, and for US$100 many people would buy a hand-cranked laptop just to be able to check their e-mail when the power goes out.
