    Try living in reality

    By Robert Clark

    Monday, Jun 13, 2005, Page 8

This letter is in response to Kevin Larson's letter (Letters, June 8, page 8). It is not the issues of the bookstore and the film to which I wish to respond, but to the issue of heterosexuality as a "warmongering" ethic, and to Larson's illogical defense of his position.

"First, there is statistical evidence that shows heterosexual couples are much more likely than gays and lesbians to commit acts of violence on their spouses and children."

Well, why not quote a source or reference for us to examine? As well, do you mean gays and lesbians in legally sanctioned relationships, or otherwise? If we examine a city with a population of 180,000 heterosexuals and 20,000 homosexuals, by numbers of incidents reported, it's more likely we will see a larger number of reports of heterosexual violence. But does this mean heterosexuals are necessarily more violent than homosexuals?

"Second, homosexuality threatens the old bastions of patriarchal rule." Patriarchal (defined by MSN Encarta) reads: "relating to or characteristic of a culture in which men are the most powerful members."

Why would homosexuality in the form of gay men "threaten the bastion of patriarchal rule"? What about gay men who dominate other men? Do you mean that gay men are not men? "Patriarchal" has nothing to do with the situation, so please don't toss in politically correct words as you like.

"I believe they are stronger, and have better things to do." So, people should have better things to do than defend their country from invaders? Since we are now on the subject of beliefs, I believe that this is an attempted rationalization of cowardice.

Furthermore, your definition of heterosexuality as a "soul-stifling, warmongering ethic" is blatant "heterophobia." Please leave the university classroom and take a deep breath of reality.
