Letter: KMT shouldn't point fingers

The pan-blue camp's posturing and comments about the breakthrough in the investigation into the assassination attempt on the president and vice president are an insult to the diligent work and ethics of the law-enforcement agents, as well as the intelligence of voters ("Commissioner debunks 319 rumor," March 11, page 4).

In his report to the legislature, Criminal Investigation Bureau Commissioner Hou You-yi (侯友宜) should compare this case to previous unsolved cases, such as the murders of Chen Wen-chun (陳文成) and former DPP chairman Lin I-hsiung's (林義雄) family members. I believe him when he says, "This is probably the most difficult case of my life."

He should compare the failed assassination to these murders, in terms of how the case is being pursued, how inquiries have been handled, how evidence has been preserved and recorded, and how evidence has been gathered and verified or discarded.

I am sure that by doing so, Hou will be able to show how law-enforcement agencies have become an institution of Taiwan's democracy, rather than an instrument of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) dictatorship and a tool to trample human rights, which it used to be.

It will also show how ridiculous it is for the KMT to criticize an investigation that is far more legitimate than it would have been under KMT rule.
