Great praise is due to the Taiwan legislature for forbidding the use of dogs and cats for fur or food (New law removes dog and cat from Taiwan menus, Jan. 3, page 2). This is a great civilized move and one which makes me feel much more secure on a future planned trip this spring to Taiwan. I had a pet dog I loved for 15 and a half years and many of us in our part of Toronto, Canada have pets they love and will welcome this news.
Shame then on the supposed "humane" society for destroying dogs and cats too soon, especially the tragedy of the man whose dog was being euthanized while he was filling out the papers to pick it up! Measures should be taken so that shelter pets are not euthanized at all. This would be another piece of welcome news.
But once again, Taiwan has shown great leadership in Asia by banning the inhumane eating of dogs and cats.
Thank you.
