The spiritual side of genetic work

By Albert Chen 陳建志

Aspects of such "introspective" arguments can fall within the scope of mysticism: Seth also argues that an unconscious agreement by all family members can be one factor in the birth of mentally challenged children.

In tackling the impact of genetic engineering, however, we need to promote debate on the mysteries of such things as extrasensory perception and consciousness. Such inquiries into the inner recesses of the soul should balance the materialism that currently dominates such work.

According to Naisbitt, the ongoing development of genetic engineering is inevitable. It will also occur at an astonishing speed. Technology to counter-balance its effects is not practical, but spiritual arguments must be debated, precisely because genetic engineering has the potential to move in so many directions.

Today's religions tread a fine line between moralism and the pursuit of their original function, revealing the essence of religion -- mystic experience, supramundane values, a multi-faceted blueprint of life, and so on. This is one of the challenges to major religions today, both in Taiwan and abroad.

The future role of genetic engineering may well be directed by mainstream values in society. Debates may revolve around the problem of whether life before our eyes is "splendid or not." People will bite their lips when it comes to the meaning of life and spirituality. (How come no one has ever mentioned developing human genes with more compassion and more love for peace?)

Religions and spiritual studies contain oceans of wisdom. If we probe deeper into the mysteries of consciousness and produce commentary and analysis of the issue, this will either help to slow down the overly precipitate growth of genetic engineering or, at least, make it more conducive to enhancing our quality of life.

Albert Chen is a lecturer in the English department of Tamkang University.
