Finally, one thing that is missing from the historical record: we know far more about the US side of the matter than we do about Taiwan's. Why? Because the documents that would reveal Taiwan's side of the story are still classified -- as is almost every other government document. All the more reason to speed up the passage of the Freedom of Information Act, the National Secrets Protection bill and the Archives Act, currently pending review by legislators, which will go at least some way toward giving Taiwan the more open government that its democratic society demands.
