United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯電), the world's second-largest supplier of made-to-order chips, said July sales rose 74 percent from a year earlier to NT$6.72 billion. Sales were NT$6.71 billion in June. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電), UMC's larger rival, said yesterday that July sales that fell 13 percent from the previous month. United Microelectronics shares rose 3.6 percent to NT$29, compared with a 3.2 percent gain in the TAIEX.
