Ministry registers investments

STAFF WRITER, WITH AGENCIES

Some US$345.8 million's worth of investment in 211 projects by Taiwan firms in China (that did not previously apply for government approval) were registered with the Ministry of Economic Affairs in July under the terms of an investment amnesty, officials said yesterday.

Of the 211 projects, one was worth over US$10 million, while eight were worth between US$5 million and US$10 million, the ministry's Investment Commission said, noting that the number was up from 140 and the total value had exceeded US$2.32 billion as of July 24.

The commission urged Taiwan enterprises with unreported investments in the mainland to register as soon as possible. However, it added that businesses investing in mainland industries that the ministry has deemed as prohibited, cannot register and such illegitimate investors might face punishment by the government.

A six-month registration campaign was launched at the beginning of July, following previous drives in 1993 and 1997.
