State-run surpluses rise

STAFF WRITER

The combined pre-tax surplus of the 10 state-run enterprises under the Ministry of Economic Affairs amounted to NT$10.99 billion for the first half of the year, which is 52 percent higher than earlier projections, the ministry said yesterday.

The spokesman said that the Chinese Petroleum Corp (中油), the Taiwan Power Co (台電) and the Taiwan Sugar Corp (台糖) were major contributors to the surplus, although the Taiwan Water Supply Corp (自來水公司) failed to attain its target.

Currently, there are 31 state-run enterprises under the supervision of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

The report, released last week, indicates that in 1992, the revenues of the state-run enterprises accounted for 31.33 percent of the GDP. By 2000, the revenues of public businesses represented only 18.77 percent of the GDP.
