Cross-strait lending in the offing

STAFF WRITER

The government may allow the nation's banks to join loan syndicates that include institutions from China, the Ministry of Finance said.

Taiwanese lenders will be allowed to take part in syndicates to arrange loans for non-China entities, so long as the bank heading the group isn't a Chinese institution, the ministry said yesterday in a statement.

The ministry said it wouldn't bar local banks from joining loan syndicates in which Chinese institutions act as coordinating arrangers. The statement said the ministry spelled out its stand after local banks missed out on lending opportunities.

Such a move may bring more business for banks in Taiwan, where total loans fell a 10th straight month in May, declining by 3.5 percent, according to the latest available figures from the Central Bank of China.
