Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) will submit an application to the Ministry of Economic Affairs next week to set up an eight-inch wafer plant in China, a Chinese-language newspaper reported yesterday.
If the investment plan is approved by the ministry, TSMC expects to move on to the next stage of its China plan by August or September, the report said.
The Cabinet announced in late March it would conditionally allow local chipmakers such as TSMC and United Microelectronics Corp (聯電) to set up wafer plants in China.
But a senior spokesman said there is no definite timetable so far for the application to set up shop there, the paper said.
