Light metal production may rise

The production value of light metals is expected to hit NT$80 billion (US$2.36 billion) by 2007, an official with the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday. In view of the increasing use of light metals -- titanium, magnesium and aluminum -- the government has included the industry in the 10 major investment projects of its ambitious "Challenge 2008" national development project, said the official, who spoke on condition of that he not be identified. The government is planning to invest at least NT$100 million to help promote the industry, the official said.
