Cellphone makers hope for a rebound

With the market for handsets mature, firms such as Nokia hope consumers will find a reason to buy two phones

BLOOMBERG , HANOVER, GERMANY

Among novelties already for sale is the 5510, which is held horizontally with both hands. The phone, which has a full keyboard split on each side of the centered screen, is aimed at game-playing youth who send many text messages.

In the second quarter, Nokia will begin to ship the 7650, which features a color screen and a built-in camera. The handset has a high-speed Internet connection, allowing users to swap pictures with friends immediately after taking them.

For now, though, multiple phone owners are typically gadget lovers such as Jensen, said Maazon of retailer Geab.

"I remain to be convinced," said Ben Wood, a senior analyst at Gartner. Multiple phone owners "will account for a fairly small part of the market over the coming two years."

Even Jensen acknowledges he's an exception to the rule.

"Certain people, like my mother, will never own more than one mobile phone."
