"I wonder about people who are momentum chasers," said John Brooks, general partner of Prism Venture Partners of Westwood, Massachusetts. "You have to have the knowledge. There are unique regulatory, reimbursement and distribution issues facing these firms. You can't just flit in and flit out."
Still, Brooks says, there is some satisfaction in having the pendulum swing back to one of Prism's long-time strengths.
"When we were closing our fourth fund a couple of years ago, some of our investors asked us, `Why aren't you investing in dot-coms?' We just said it takes longer but the expectation is there's real opportunity there. This year, a lot of them are thrilled, and they're saying, `You guys are great, you're in health care.'"
