Paul O'Neill: Washington's Forrest Gump?

Many were baffled when the US president tapped the retiring chairman of aluminum giant Alcoa Inc as treasury secretary. Five months into the job, O'Neill still isn't getting many raves on Wall Street

The film character Tom Hanks won an Oscar portraying may have seemed a hopeless country bumpkin but turned out to be on the right side of many aspects of history. He was visionary of sorts who pretty much always came out on top.

Ultimately, though, "I don't think we'll learn much until his first crisis," says Ward McCarthy, a managing director of Stone & McCarthy Research Associates in Princeton. "That's when he will be able to strut his stuff -- or stub his toe."
