Machine tool exports last month rose 8.1 percent from the previous month on the back of rising exports to Europe, the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association said yesterday.

Machine tool exports rose to US$352.15 million last month, from US$325.61 million in May, according to data compiled by the Greater Taichung-based association.

The figure last month was 13.2 percent higher than US$310.95 million posted the previous year, the association said.

“Sales to Europe increased significantly after we participated in an exhibition there at the end of last year,” association secretary-general Carl Huang (黃建中) said by telephone yesterday. “Clients in the region purchased more machine tools as the debt crisis eased.”

Machine tool exports to Turkey increased the highest — by 43.3 percent to US$19.25 million from May — while shipments to the Netherlands surged 23.7 percent to US$10.05 million and those to Germany rose 20 percent to US$10.86 million, the association said.

Machine tool exports to China, which is the largest destination for Taiwanese goods in the sector, also grew 3.5 percent to US$135.08 million from US$130.46 million in May, data showed.

From January through last month, machine tool exports increased 4.9 percent to US$1.81 billion from US$1.73 billion the previous year, the data showed.
