Everlight Electronics Co (億光電子), the nation’s top LED chip packager, yesterday said it expected no impact on its chip sales from the latest patent infringement allegations from Japanese rival Nichia Corp.

The company’s statement came after Nichia on Wednesday issued a statement saying that it had filed amended complaints in its patent litigation against Everlight and Everlight’s US subsidiary, Everlight Americas Inc.

Everlight said it has redesigned the “problematic” products to avoid the impact from the long-standing patent lawsuits, which were first filed in 2006.

The firm said it has been investing in developing and licensed patents from global companies such as Osram Licht AG to avoid future lawsuits.

Everlight currently has 1,600 patents registered, according to a company statement.

Since 2006, Everlight and Nichia have filed a total of 28 patent infringement lawsuits against each other in countries including China, Japan, Germany and the US.

Nichia said the amended complaints include claims regarding three more patents — US patent No. 7,462,870, No. 7,521,863 and No. 8,530,250.

Nichia also named two new defendants — Everlight’s US subsidiary, Zenaro Lighting Inc, and Zenaro’s US product distributor, Zitroz LLC — in its infringement claim under US patent No. 8,530,250, the company said.
