Salaries slump in real terms
The average annual salary rose slightly last year, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday. Annual salaries averaged NT$636,328 (US$21,500) last year, up 0.5 percent, or NT$2,952, from 2011. However, inflation in Taiwan reached 1.93 percent last year, which means that salaries in real terms actually dropped. The annual growth rate was also small compared with the growth rate of 4.5 percent from 2010 to 2011, the DGBAS said.
7-inch panels drive growth
Global shipments of LCD panels used in tablet computers showed signs of recovery in July after three consecutive months of decline, according to NPD DisplaySearch. The researcher said on Friday last week that 23 million tablet panels were shipped in July, an 8 percent increase from the previous month, primarily driven by 7-inch panels, which accounted for 49 percent of all shipments.
App downloads jump 60%
Annual downloads from mobile application stores will surge dramatically this year, according to Gartner Inc. Downloads from such stores are expected to total 102 billion this year, up from 64 billion last year, Gartner said. The total revenue from app downloads this year will likely reach US$26 billion, up from US$18 billion last year, Gartner forecast.
