Domestic companies’ demand for part-time employees has seen steady growth over the past three years, as more employers chose to hire part-time workers for positions in their non-core sectors, 104 Job Bank (104人力銀行) said yesterday.
The online manpower agency’s report showed that part-time job openings recorded in its database totaled 54,000 this month, up 20.7 percent from a year earlier.
Compared with the same period in 2010, part-time job openings showed a 1.15-fold increase this month, stronger than growth in the full-time sector, the manpower agency said.
Full-time job openings totaled 306,000 this month, up 69 percent from the same period in 2010, its data showed.
“Increased numbers of companies have adopted a more diverse recruitment strategy over the past few years by outsourcing non-core business or hiring more part-time workers for non-core business sectors,” 104 marketing director Regis Chen (陳力孓) said in a statement.
The stronger seasonal demand for short-term workers before the Lunar New Year was another factor boosting the number of part-time positions, he said. Analyzing the long-term trend, more companies hired part-time employees regardless of the economic climate, he added.
Companies in the catering and retail industries showed the strongest demand for part-time employees, with total jobs in these two sectors reaching 27,000, accounting for half of the total openings in the job bank’s database.
Job openings in the bank’s database overall totaled 360,000 this month.
