Consumers snatch up 60-inch LED TVs

CyberMart (賽博數碼), an electronics retail arm of the Hon Hai Group (鴻海集團), said consumers have snatched up all 500 60-inch RadioShack LED TVs available on the Internet yesterday, providing an further evidence that the demand for such big TVs is real.

On Monday, CyberMart chairman Steve Chang (張瑞麟) announced that the company would start selling the US’ No. 2 electronics brand’s large-screen TVs in Taiwan and China yesterday.

The company originally planned to offer 500 RadioShack TVs over three days, but they sold out in just an hour on Yahoo Kimo Inc’s (雅虎奇摩) Web site, a CyberMart public relations official said yesterday.

“We did not expect to sell out all those TVs in such a short period of time. This is another indication that having a large-screen in your living room is becoming a trend,” the PR officer said by telephone.

In Taiwan, orders for 60-inch TVs have exceeded supply ninefold, the official said, adding that CyberMart only has 500 RadioShack TVs left in its warehouse.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密), which makes iPhones and iPads for Apple Inc and TVs for Sony, also produces 60-inch LED TVs for Vizio Inc and other brands.

Hon Hai, the flagship company of the Hon Hai Group, has access to cost-efficient 60-inch flat panels from the world’s only 10th-generation panel plant operated by Sharp Corp through Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou’s (郭台銘) 37.61 percent share in Sharp’s Sakai Display Productions Co.

CyberMart will begin selling RadioShack TVs at its outlets on Friday. The retailer is targeting corporate consumers for the 60-inch TVs, which will sell for NT$58,800 per unit.

CyberMart also sells 60-inch LED TVs for NT$38,800 each, bundling it with digital content packages from the nation’s top telecoms operator Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信), or with cable TV system operator Kbro Co (凱擘).
