Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) expects to sell more than 5,000 60-inch LED TVs made by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密), bundled with its Internet TV services by the end of the year, a company executive said yesterday.
Demand for the TVs has exceeded the company’s expectations, Tu Yuan-kuang (涂元光), president of Chunghwa Telecom’s northern Taiwan business group, told reporters on the sidelines of a conference launching new TV programs from Next TV (壹電視) via the company’s multimedia-on-demand (MOD) platform.
Last year, Next TV began airing its news programs on Chunghwa Telcom’s MOD platform.
Since the launch of Hon Hai’s 60-inch TVs on Nov. 11, Chunghwa said it has sold more than 2,500 units.
The company offers the TVs at a relatively low price of NT$38,800 with a two-year MOD service contract that carries a minimum charge of NT$359 per month.
Tu said the service package helped grow MOD subscriptions, but it would be very challenging to reach the goal of expanding its customer base to 1.3 million subscribers this year. The company currently has 1.19 million MOD subscribers.
Multiple systems operator Kbro Co (凱擘), which also offers 60-inch Hon Hai TVs, last week said it expected to sell 20,000 TV sets next year, citing stronger-than-expected demand.
Kbro has sold 1,000 units in the first 10 days since the launch of the TV set on Nov. 11.
Kbro originally targeted selling 5,000 units by the Lunar New Year holidays in February.
