Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密) has received more than 10,000 orders for its 60-inch TVs since it began selling large-screen TVs in Taiwan on Nov. 11, far more than the company had predicted, sources familiar with the TV manufacturing sector said yesterday.
Hon Hai, the world’s largest contract electronics maker, had expected orders for about 2,000 60-inch TVs per month, but actual orders so far have increased to five times the forecast volume, the sources said.
They forecast that the high sales volumes will continue through to the end of the year.
Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) has recently touted the 60-inch high-definition TVs as a support device that provides consumers with data and content.
Currently, the TVs are sold as part of a service package jointly launched by Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) and multiple systems operator Kbro Co (凱擘).
On Tuesday, Chunghwa Telecom said that promotional sales of Hon Hai’s 60-inch TVs to multimedia service subscribers have been brisker than expected since the product was launched earlier this month.
The telecoms operator said it had already sold more than 1,000 of the TVs and it expected sales of the new product to continue to rise as Christmas approaches.
The company is offering the TVs at a relatively low price of NT$38,800 (US$1,300) to individuals who sign a two or three-year contract for multimedia-on-demand services for a monthly fee of NT$359.
