XPEC Entertainment Inc (樂陞科技), one of the leading game developers in Taiwan, yesterday announced the launch of a strategic relationship with SEE Games LLC to co-develop and distribute original downloadable games tied to major Hollywood intellectual properties (IP).

SEE Games, a member of the Los Angeles-based Special Entertainment Events Inc’s family of companies, is a natural extension of the company’s core licensing business, which brings the world of themed entertainment online.

The collaboration between two companies is part of the results of the “Invest in Taiwan” project of the Council for Economic Planning and Development. The council held a seven-day road show in the US in May last year.

“SEE Games’ leadership in securing major IP licenses is what sets them apart from the competition,” XPEC chairman Aaron Hsu (許金龍) told a press briefing after signing an agreement of collaboration with SEE Games yesterday morning. “With both companies’ expertise, we are confident that players and fans of these franchises alike will not be disappointed.”

The two companies would focus on developing multi-platform online games applicable for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PCs, which would be released worldwide, Hsu said.

However, Hsu refused to publicize the exact amount of investment, while saying the proportion of funds invested by SEE Games may total 50 percent.

The company plans to release the IP it would use as the theme of the first game it develops with SEE Games between the end of March and early April, with the first game officially entering the market by year end.

XPEC’s shares rose by the 7 percent daily limit to close at NT$73.2 on the local bourse yesterday, compared with the TAIEX’s 0.39 percent decline, Taiwan Stock Exchange data showed.
