Chimei Innolux Corp (奇美電子), the nation’s top LCD panel maker, and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd (中華映管) were yesterday added to the list of local firms facing anti-trust fines by South Korea’s competition watchdog.

The two companies said they were notified by South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission that they had broken the anti-trust law, they said in separate exchange filings.

The companies did not detail potential damage from the litigation, but said they would adopt appropriate countermeasures to minimize the possible impact.

On Tuesday, AU Optronics Corp (友達光電) said it would appeal the commission’s anti-trust allegation, followed a day later by HannStar Display Corp (瀚宇彩晶), which said it was also involved in the anti-trust probe.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs yesterday said it would do its best to help the companies sort out the complaints.

In other news, HannStar yesterday reported its sixth straight quarterly loss, with losses last quarter widening to NT$1.57 billion (US$54 million), compared with losses of NT$1.44 billion in the first quarter, after it booked losses from selling a Chinese LCD panel module plant.

The LCD panel maker lost NT$441 million in the second quarter of last year.

Gross profits improved to NT$846 million last quarter, from NT$624 million in the first quarter, according to the company’s financial statement.

Average selling price rose 3.5 percent quarter-on-quarter to US$89 per unit last quarter, the company said. It did not provide first-quarter figures for comparison.
