AN OPIUM ALTERNATIVE

Afghan women on Saturday collect saffron flowers in the Karukh district of Herat, Afghanistan. The saffron industry in the province of Herat, according to figures, has hired more than 5,000 people, with 40 percent of them being women, to cover about 400 hectares of land. The plant is seen as an alternative to poppy cultivation and international buyers from around the world, including in Europe, the US, China and India, have been attracted to its quality.Nov 06, 2017
