The nation’s two major convenience store operators on Tuesday reported record-high sales for last month, with summer a relatively high season for the retail industry.
President Chain Store Corp’s (PCSC, 統一超商) sales increased 7 percent annually to NT$18.97 billion (USD$607.53 million) last month, with aggregate sales in the first seven months rising 6.26 percent annually to NT$124.72 billion.
The company attributed the monthly growth to a surge in sales of fresh food, iced products and cold noodles.
Contribution from its overseas outlets, including in the Philippines, and non-core investments — such as drugstore chain Cosmed (康是美), online bookstore Books.com (博客來) and coffee chain President Starbucks Coffee Corp (統一星巴克) — also helped stimulate its consolidated sales, the company said in a statement.
For this quarter, the company hopes to see sales continue increasing, with Ghost Month and Mid-Autumn Festival expected to help.
In the first half, net profit increased 17.68 percent annually to NT$5.37 billion, or earnings per share of NT$4.84.
Taiwan FamilyMart Co (全家便利商店) reported revenue last month increased 4 percent year-on-year to NT5.51 billion, with the company attributing the growth to a 10 percent annual growth in fresh-food products.
From January to last month, total revenue increased 4.59 percent to NT$33.36 billion from a year earlier, company data showed.
FamilyMart expects to see growth momentum in the second half driven by its newly launched coffee and bread products.
In the first half, the company’s net profit expanded 14.24 percent to NT$617.71 million from the previous year, with earnings per share of NT$2.77.
