Asustek Computer Inc (華碩) shipped the most cellphones of any Taiwanese maker in the second quarter of this year, according to Taipei-based market research group Digitimes Research.
Digitimes on Friday said that Asustek shipped 3.3 million cellphones during the April to June period, thanks to strong demand for its ZenFone 2 series.
The 8GB, 16GB and 32GB variants of the ZenFone 2 Laser ZE500KL all placed among the top 10 best sellers in the domestic market for that month, the research house said.
Asustek is expected to launch sales of its new flagship model — the ZenFone 3 — in the second half of this year.
HTC Corp (宏達電) placed second after shipping 3 million units in the second quarter, Digitimes said.
The smartphone maker unveiled its latest flagship model — the HTC 10 — in April, but sales have proven disappointing.
Arima Communications Corp (華冠) shipped 2.54 million cellphones in the second quarter to take third place, supported by orders from Asustek and South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc.
Overall, aggregate cellphone shipments from Taiwanese manufacturers totaled 12.06 million units in the April-to-June quarter, down by 13.5 percent from the previous quarter and 45.4 percent from a year earlier, Digitimes said.
Contract makers, such as Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶), Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海) and Wistron Corp (緯創) saw aggregate shipments drop 14.2 percent in the second quarter from the previous quarter, the research house said.
Meanwhile, aggregate shipments by Taiwanese brands such Asustek, HTC and Acer Inc (宏碁) registered a 3.6 percent drop from the previous quarter, the report said.
Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but first the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he has other concerns. The cost is one deterrent, but Garrett is more worried about restrictions on academic freedom and the personal risk of being stranded in China. He is not alone. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of nearly 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at US schools. Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see

New apartments in Taiwan’s major cities are getting smaller, while old apartments are increasingly occupied by older people, many of whom live alone, government data showed. The phenomenon has to do with sharpening unaffordable property prices and an aging population, property brokers said. Apartments with one bedroom that are two years old or older have gained a noticeable presence in the nation’s six special municipalities as well as Hsinchu county and city in the past five years, Evertrust Rehouse Co (永慶房產集團) found, citing data from the government’s real-price transaction platform. In Taipei, apartments with one bedroom accounted for 19 percent of deals last
