Ruten saw value of online transactions double last year

By Lauly Li  /  Staff reporter (露天拍賣) yesterday said that transactions on its online platform reached more than NT$50 billion (US$1.58 billion) last year, doubling from the previous year due to the increasing popularity of mobile shopping.

Chief operating officer Vicky Tseng (曾薰儀) said she expects e-commerce to continue growing this year, driven by transactions using handheld devices.

“Our goal is to reach more than NT$100 billion in transactions, with more than 100 million items offered on the Web site by 2016,” Tseng said.

As of last year, Ruten had more than 8 million registered buyers and 1 million sellers. There were more than 80 million items listed for auction, while Ruten’s monthly page view had more than 1 billion hits, company data showed.

With the legislature recently approving amendments to the Electronics Payment Processing Institutions Act (電子支付機構管理條例), which offers a legal basis for third-party payment services, Tseng said the company expects its cooperation with PChomePay Inc (支付連) to help increase Ruten’s transactions.

Ruten is a joint venture of PChome Online Inc (網路家庭) and eBay Inc. PChomePay is a subsidiary of PChome Online.

Tseng said Ruten plans to assist its auctioneers in selling overseas by offering consulting services.

“We aim to become the leader in Taiwan’s cross-border e-commerce segment,” Tseng said.
