Ruten.com’s (露天拍賣) transaction volume has increased by 15 percent year-on-year, thanks to the increasing use of handheld devices, a company executive said yesterday.
“More than 75 percent of buyers browse our page via handheld devices and 45 percent of clients make purchases through smartphones or tablets,” Ruten chief operating officer Vicky Tseng (曾薰儀) told a press conference.
Ruten.com is an auction Web site created by PC Home Online (網路家庭) and eBay Inc.
Tseng declined to reveal Ruten’s revenue figures.
For this quarter, Tseng said a recent survey shows that Ruten’s pageviews via mobile devices surged 87 percent from last quarter, while the number of unique visitors rose 77 percent quarterly.
She said the survey showed that the most common search keywords used by handheld device users on Ruten this year were power banks for smartphones, motorcycle parts and concert tickets for South Korean bands.
Tseng said that Ruten is working on improving its Web site to fit the format of various devices, hoping to attract more users.
She said that the growth momentum of its e-commerce segment would continue to be driven by the increasing use of handheld devices next year.
International Data Corp (IDC) also said in a report that the growth in smartphone and tablet use in the Asia-Pacific region shows that an era of mobile commerce is emerging.
“We’ve witnessed the consumer segment’s wholesale transition to mobility. Emerging markets like India and Indonesia are already experiencing higher proportions of Internet traffic over mobile devices than traditional PC browsers,” IDC research manager for enterprise mobility Ian Song said in the report.
The report said China’s Singles’ Day sales on Nov. 11 saw more than 40 percent of all transactions completed on mobile devices.
Next year, more than 50 percent of consumer transactions would be carried out via handheld devices, the report said.
