China’s Alibaba compiling list of top 10 e-commerce businesses in Taiwan

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (阿里巴巴) is planning to pay tribute to top Taiwanese e-commerce operators later this week with a list of the nation’s top 10 online businesses.

After three months of selecting from nearly 100 small and medium-sized Taiwanese enterprises, the 10 winners are scheduled to be announced on Friday at an awards ceremony in Taipei, Alibaba said on its official Web site for the event.

The Chinese-language United Evening News yesterday cited Bryan Fu (傅紀清), general manager of Alibaba’s Taiwan branch, as saying that Alibaba’s top 10 list aims at encouraging local small and medium-sized businesses to learn from each other and enhance their global competitiveness.

Many Taiwanese companies that still see Web sites as an auxiliary rather than main conduit for business should be focusing on becoming more active by creating new business models, improving operational efficiency and refreshing their corporate culture, he said.

Fresh from pulling off the world’s largest initial public offering, Alibaba is planning its first business-to-business e-commerce summit in Taiwan on Thursday. Alibaba vice president Liang Chunxiao (梁春曉) is expected to talk about the industry at the summit.
