TSMC unveils new platform

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) yesterday announced its first ultra-low-power technology platform for Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable devices. The platform offers multiple processes to provide significant power reduction benefits for IoT and wearable products, the chipmaker said. Compared with their previous low-power generations, TSMC’s ultra-low-power processes can further reduce operating voltages by 20 to 30 percent, to lower both active power and standby power consumption and enable significant increases in battery life, the firm said.

Hiring rates to slow in Q4

Significantly fewer local businesses are planning to hire new staff in the fourth quarter of the year, due mainly to planned minimum wage hikes and the latest food scare, an online job broker said yesterday. A survey of 588 businesses conducted from Sept. 4 to Sept. 18 by 1111 Job Bank found that 50.5 percent of respondents intended to hire in the fourth quarter, down 70.65 percent quarter-on-quarter and 62.92 percent year-on-year. 1111 Job Bank vice president Ho Chi-sheng (何啟聖) said that many food retailers and restaurants have taken a wait-and-see approach toward hiring, with the tainted oil scare undermining consumer confidence in dining out, which has affected many food-and-beverage businesses.
