Exports dip in first half

Exports of Taiwan-made textile products, including ready-to-wear garments and upstream fabrics, totaled US$5.81 billion in the first six months of the year, edging down 0.3 percent from a year, the Taiwan Textile Federation said yesterday. The decline was caused by a slight downtrend in product prices, in particular the price of artificial fibers, the local textile promotion group said. Meanwhile, textile imports rose 2.9 percent year-on-year to NT$1.59 billion in the first half of the year, the group said. This resulted in a trade surplus of US$4.22 billion in the first half of the year, down 1.4 percent from a year earlier, it said, citing recently released customs data.

HTC says no smartwatch

HTC Corp (宏達電) yesterday said that the smartwatch that could be seen in one of its recent commercial videos is not an actual product it is planning to release. In an official video entitled HTC Design — Behind the Scenes which was released on YouTube earlier this month, some viewers noticed a smartwatch on the desk of an HTC employee and another on a monitor in an HTC office. The glimpse sparked rumors the company was set to release a new product. The Taiwanese handset maker denied the device seen in the video is a product for sale, but hinted that some “exciting” new products may be released soon.
