Audi Taiwan Co (台灣奧迪), the No. 5 luxury car importer in the nation, yesterday unveiled an ambitious sales target for the year that will see it aim to sell 25 percent more cars than last year on the back of strong sales of its new models.
The company aims to sell 5,125 cars this year, up 1,025 units from the 4,100 it sold last year, senior manager David Chen (陳百鈞) said.
The figure marks an upward revision from the 5,000 units Audi Taiwan targeted in February.
From January through last month, the firm’s sales grew 22.1 percent to 1,904 vehicles to take 7.7 percent of the market’s premium sector, industry data showed.
This year, Audi Taiwan aims to sell 300 of its luxury A8 sedans, a model it launched on April 10 and for which it has received 150 orders as of yesterday, Chen said.
He said that the price of an Audi A8 ranges from NT$3.79 million to NT$6.33 million (US$126,400 to US$210,000).
The company yesterday launched its A8 L W12 sedan — priced at NT$9.34 million — and the NT$7.15 million S8 sedan on the local market. Chen said it expects to sell 20 to 30 units of both models this year.
The vendor kept its yearly sales target of 900 to 1,000 units for its A3 Sportback and A3 sedans unchanged, a range which would mark an approximately 50 percent annualized increased, Chen said.
Turning to the domestic market, Chen gave an upbeat outlook, citing the 13.8 percent growth to 170,365 units sold that the car sector has recorded over the past five months, but warned that the seven-in-one elections at the end of the year could impact the market.
“Car sales often decline before elections because customers adopt a wait-and-see stance before the results are announced,” he said.
Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but first the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he has other concerns. The cost is one deterrent, but Garrett is more worried about restrictions on academic freedom and the personal risk of being stranded in China. He is not alone. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of nearly 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at US schools. Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see

New apartments in Taiwan’s major cities are getting smaller, while old apartments are increasingly occupied by older people, many of whom live alone, government data showed. The phenomenon has to do with sharpening unaffordable property prices and an aging population, property brokers said. Apartments with one bedroom that are two years old or older have gained a noticeable presence in the nation’s six special municipalities as well as Hsinchu county and city in the past five years, Evertrust Rehouse Co (永慶房產集團) found, citing data from the government’s real-price transaction platform. In Taipei, apartments with one bedroom accounted for 19 percent of deals last
