Bicycle maker Giant Manufacturing Co (巨大機械) has won a tender to build a public bicycle rental system in Greater Taichung, called iBike, which the city hopes will complement its new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, the Taichung Transportation Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau plans to set up 20 bicycle rental stations around the city by the end of this year in conjunction with the opening of the BRT system in the second half of the year, the bureau said.
The bicycle company has gained considerable experience from building and operating Taipei’s YouBike system, the bureau said, adding that it hoped Giant would be able to use the experience to expedite the development of a similar system in Greater Taichung.
In the program’s initial stage, iBike rental stations will be built mainly along the BRT’s Blue Line between Taichung Main Station and Chaoma Station. It will then be extended 2km out to help people complete their daily commute, the bureau said.
Giant plans to open two pilot stations in July and have 20 in place by the end of this year and 60 ready within two years, the bureau said.
Areas near schools, business districts, transportation hubs, tourist attractions, department stores and convenience stores are all candidates for setting up bicycle rental stations.
