Unity Opto Technology Co (東貝光電) yesterday said it expects sales to grow for the third consecutive month this month on the back of growing demand for LED lighting products and backlight modules in Western countries.
The nation’s second-largest LED chip packager by sales released its guidance after reporting that sales had expanded for the second straight month to NT$601.55 million (US$19.9 million) last month.
Last month’s figure represents a 7.4 percent month-on-month increase and a 20 percent year-on-year growth, according to the company’s filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
Cumulative sales during the first two months grew 14.5 percent to NT$1.16 billion from the same period last year, the filing showed.
“Last month’s sales expanded on a monthly and annual basis mainly because of increased orders for LED bulbs from US and European clients,” Unity Opto said in a statement.
“The increase was also attributable to increased orders for LED backlight modules used in large-sized LCD TVs, and those used in smaller-sized mobile devices,” it added.
Unity Opto said it had obtained new orders for LED backlight modules that are used in LCD TVs.
Strong demand for the company’s LED backlight modules should continue through the Labor Day holiday in May, it added.
The company’s LED backlight modules used in LCD TVs with screens larger than 40 inches grew the most since the beginning of the year, while those used in ultra-high-resolution LCD TVs also increased, data showed.
“We should be able to see total quarterly sales expand on an annual basis from this quarter due to growing demand for LED backlight modules as well as lighting products,” Unity Opto said in the statement.
