Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密) secured its No. 1 ranking among local firms in filing the most patent applications last year for the 12th year running, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.
Hon Hai, the world’s largest contract electronics maker, filed 3,086 patent applications last year, according to a tally by the ministry’s Intellectual Property Office.
The number was significantly higher than the 598 applications filed by No. 2 patent applicant Wistron Corp (緯創), the world’s third-largest contract laptop maker, and 584 applications submitted by the government-funded Industrial Technology Research Institute.
Hon Hai also stayed No. 1 in number of patents granted, as the assembler of Apple Inc’s iPhones and iPads received 2,167 approvals for its patent applications last year.
Following Hon Hai were the institute and panel maker AU Optronics Corp (友達光電), which received 931 and 822 patent grants last year as the second and third-largest new patent holders in the country respectively.
Hon Hai filed 8.47 percent less patent applications last year from a year earlier, mainly because of adjustments in business strategies in recent years, the office said.
That was the third straight year of decline for Hon Hai, which hit a record high of 4,412 applications in 2010, the office said.
With 581 patent applications, the US’ Apple Inc was No. 1 internationally last year, beating all foreign firms, the office said.
South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co Ltd trailed Apple with 458 patent application filings.
