Eslite Spectrum Corp (誠品生活), the operator of Taiwan’s leading bookshop chain, Eslite Bookstore, yesterday said it would establish a foothold in Shanghai by 2015.
Eslite signed a letter of intent with the developer of the Shanghai Tower, a 121-story skyscraper, to lease 6,500m2 of space. The tower is expected to open in 2015.
The company said it aims to set up a store catering to the general public in its B1 space and a more upmarket venue for white-collar workers and Eslite members on its space on the 52nd and 53rd floors.
Eslite said it envisions creating friendly and diverse environments that will emerge as a cultural and creative platform incorporating Taiwanese and Shanghai features.
“Eslite cherishes its venture with the Shanghai Center Tower, and hopes to capture the spirit of the city’s amazing people in a warm and hospitable environment,” Eslite chairman Robert Wu (吳清友) said.
Wu said his bookstores have always had a “romantic” feel, which is why Eslite chose Suzhou as the location for its first Chinese store.
However, he added that the company has been eyeing Shanghai for a long time due its location, size, population and the 8 million foreign visitors it gets every year.
