Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, ranked as the top earner in Taiwan last year for the ninth consecutive year, according to a survey.
The survey, which was released by China Credit Information Service Ltd (CCIS, 中華徵信所) on Thursday, said TSMC reported record net profit of NT$166.16 billion (US$5.54 billion) last year, up 23.8 percent from a year earlier.
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密), the world’s largest contract electronics maker, came in second, posting NT$94.76 billion in net income, ahead of Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) with NT$39.90 billion, Fubon Financial Holding Co (富邦金控) with NT$28.98 billion, contract notebook maker Quanta Computer Inc (廣達電腦) with NT$23.04 billion, and Asustek Computer Inc (華碩電腦) with NT$22.42 billion.
Mega Financial Holding Co (兆豐金控) and Chinatrust Financial Holding Co (中信金控) were also included in the top 10 earners, according to the survey.
CCIS said the presence of the financial companies on the list reflected an increase in cross-strait financial exchanges.
According to the survey, Hon Hai posted the highest sales in Taiwan, with revenue totaling NT$3.22 trillion, a record high in the company’s history. Hon Hai, which assembles iPads and iPhones for Apple Inc, kept its title for the eighth consecutive year.
CPC Corp, Taiwan (台灣中油), one of the nation’s two oil refiners, came in second with sales of NT$1.15 trillion, ahead of Quanta Computer with NT$965 billion in net sales.
Formosa Petrochemical Corp (台塑石化), the nation’s other oil refiner, posted NT$893 billion at fourth, followed by Cathay Life Insurance Co (國泰人壽) with NT$684 billion.
CCIS said it was the first time that TSMC and contract notebook maker Pegatron Corp (和碩) had placed in the top 10 on the sales list.
Pegatron, which posted NT$639 billion in sales, took sixth place while TSMC took 10th position with sales of about NT$500 billion.
After taking into account a wide range of requirements such as sales, net profit margin, sales growth and return on assets, Chong Hong Construction Co (長虹建設) ranked as the most efficient company in Taiwan, ahead of Hai Hwa Construction Co (海華建設) and Huang Hsiang Construction Corp (皇翔建設), CCIS said.
The three companies are all major property developers, and all of them enjoyed better sales from residential projects they launched last year, CCIS said.
