HTC selling E1 in China

HTC Corp (宏達電) has started selling its new E1 smartphone in China, at a price of between 1,699 yuan and 1,899 yuan (US$275 and US$307), according to HTC China’s Web site. The 4.3-inch E1 represents the company’s latest efforts to tap the fast-growing and price-sensitive mobile device market in China. In the fourth quarter of last year, HTC was ranked fourth in China with an 8.9 percent share of the smartphone market, behind Samsung Electronics Co, Nokia Oyj and Apple Inc, according to a report on smartphone use in China by Avanti, a division of global market research firm TrendForce.

Yuan deposits soar

Chinese currency deposits in local banks have exceeded the 50 billion yuan mark (US$8.08 billion), the central bank said on Tuesday. As of Sunday, 20.23 billion yuan had been deposited in domestic banking units and 29.8 billion yuan in offshore banking units, the central bank said.

Teo to lead SIA unit

Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIA) on Tuesday announced that James Teo (張榮強) would replace Benjamin Chan (曾國銘) as head of its Taiwanese operations starting this week. Teo, 32, joined the airline in 2006. He was the manager of Karnataka for the airline’s India operations prior to coming to Taiwan.
