Notebooks boost Asustek’s Q1 sales

Asustek Computer Inc (華碩), the world’s fifth-largest PC brand, yesterday posted 16 percent year-on-year growth in consolidated revenue for last quarter, supported by increased demand for notebooks in Asia-Pacific and US markets.

Asustek said in a filing submitted to the Taiwan Stock Exchange that its monthly consolidated revenue grew 29.5 percent month-on-month and 24.3 percent year-on-year to NT$41.85 billion (US$1.39 billion) last month.

Better-than-expected sales last month lifted Asustek’s first-quarter sales by 16 percent year-on-year to NT$114.28 billion, from NT$98.55 billion during the same period last year, according to data released by the company.

However, consolidated revenue last quarter fell 2.06 percent from the NT$116.6 billion made in the final quarter of last year.

“Demand for notebooks from the Chinese market remained strong, causing Asustek’s notebook shipments to grow during the first two months,” Asustek chief financial officer David Chang (張偉明) said by telephone.

Asustek’s notebook and tablet shipments met the firm’s targets of 4.7 million units and 3 million units respectively for last quarter, Chang said.

With the company set to commence shipping new notebooks and tablets this quarter, shipments of the two products are expected to increase quarter-on-quarter and help the company achieve sequential revenue growth this quarter.
