Hon Hai Precision, RadioShack team up on TVs for China

Staff writer, with CNA

The world’s largest contract electronics maker, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密), has teamed up with US-based retailer RadioShack Corp to sell 60-inch televisions in China assembled by the Taiwanese firm.

On its Web site, Cybermart (賽博數碼), Hon Hai’s retail business arm, said the sales drive, which began on Thursday, is offering 1,000 60-inch TV’s in three preferential packages in the initial phase.

The units are being sold under the RadioShack brand name.

The packages are available on Tmall.com, one of China’s leading online shopping sites, Cybermart said. Under one of the packages, consumers can buy a TV for 8,999 Chinese yuan (US$1,447) and if they pay an extra yuan they can get a Sony Blu-ray DVD player, according to Tmall.com.

The TVs use flat panels produced by Sharp Corp’s 10th-generation panel plant in western Japan, of which the Taiwanese firm owns a 46.5 percent stake.

Prior to the announcement of the RadioShack hookup, Hon Hai has partnered with two major Chinese TV brands –– Skyworth (創惟集團) and Haier (海爾) –– since late November last year to sell 60-inch TVs equipped with Sharp’s flat screens under the brand names of the two Chinese firms.

Hon Hai unveiled the 60-inch TVs in Taiwan on Nov. 11 last year in collaboration with local telecoms operators, including Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) and cable TV operator Kbro Co (凱擘). The TVs are also sold online via Cybermart.

These large-screen TVs have proven popular and have also hit US markets under the brand of Vizio.
